WASSCE Failure Spike: Analyst Says Students Prefer social media to reading

A Chief Examiner, Ben Baidoo, has expressed deep concern over more failires in the 2025 WASSCE results.

According to him, the surge is as a result of lack of interest in reading and studying on the parts of the students.

He said these students are not cultivating proper study habits but rather prefer to spend more time on social media than on their books.

“These students do not like reading. They spend more time with their phones and on social media,” he said.

Speaking on Aluta FM’s Anopa Koko with Agyaba Kwaku, Mr. Baidoo described the mass failure especially in Maths and Scinece as worrisome.

Mr. Baidoo said, parents have become “too relaxed” in their children’s academic lives, leaving students without the needed supervision and support when they are home for holidays.

“Most parents are lacking now because they don’t help their wards to study. The kids too don’t read; they spend most of their time on social media,” he stated.

Mr. Baidoo advised students to take their studies seriously by solving past questions and reading examiner guidelines so they understand what is expected of them in the exam room.

He also highlighted the problem of reduced contact hours in schools, explaining that students often spend more time at home than in the classroom.

“They can be in school for just one or two months but would stay home for three months. That also contributed greatly to the failure,” he added.

Another contributing factor, he said, is the growing tension between parents and teachers.

Teachers, he noted, face significant challenges when trying to instill discipline.

“When a teacher disciplines a student, the parents of the ward would take that teacher on,” he lamented.

Mr. Baidoo called on all stakeholders, parents, teachers, and students to go back to the drawing board and work together to prevent further decline in academic performance.
