The Government of Ghana has summoned a senior diplomat from South Africa following reports of xenophobic incidents involving foreign nationals, including Ghanaians.
In a press release issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on 23 April 2026, the Acting High Commissioner of South Africa to Ghana, Thando Dalamba, was called to a meeting with the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa. The summons was to formally convey Ghana’s concern over recent incidents circulating widely on social media, which depict harassment and intimidation of foreign nationals.
According to the statement, the Minister cited a specific case in KwaZulu-Natal Province, where a Ghanaian resident was reportedly confronted and asked to prove his legal status before being ordered to leave the country. The government described such actions as a violation of the rights and dignity of law-abiding individuals.
Mr Ablakwa further noted that while no deaths or serious injuries have been recorded in the current situation, similar past incidents in South Africa have resulted in loss of life and destruction of property. He stressed the need for urgent steps to prevent any escalation.
The Minister also highlighted the long-standing historical ties between Ghana and South Africa, referencing Ghana’s support during the anti-apartheid struggle and the contributions of Kwame Nkrumah. He warned that acts of xenophobia undermine African unity and peaceful coexistence on the continent.
In response, the South African envoy acknowledged the concerns raised and assured Ghana that his government is actively addressing the situation. He indicated that law enforcement authorities are closely monitoring developments to prevent further violence and ensure accountability for those involved.
The Government of Ghana has lodged a formal protest and called for immediate and effective measures to guarantee the safety of its citizens in South Africa. It also urged swift intervention by relevant authorities and firm assurances that such incidents will not recur.
The Ministry reaffirmed its commitment to protecting Ghanaian nationals abroad and stated that it will continue to engage South African authorities to ensure their safety and wellbeing.
