The 66 Artillery Regiment of the Ghana Armed Forces has marked its 60th anniversary with a grand durbar at the Volta Barracks in Ho, celebrating six decades of dedicated military service under the theme “Six Decades of Dedicated Service.”

The colourful ceremony brought together high-profile dignitaries, senior military officers, and members of the public to honour the regiment’s longstanding contribution to national and regional security. Among the notable attendees were the Guest of Honour, Hon. Prosper Douglas Bani, and the Volta Region’s representative on the Council of State, H.E. Gabriel Tanko Kwamigah-Atokple.
Also present was Hon. James Gunu, who joined the gathering to commemorate the milestone and show support for the regiment’s continued service to the nation.

The durbar served as a moment of reflection on the regiment’s journey since its establishment in 1966. Over the years, the 66 Artillery Regiment has built a reputation for discipline, professionalism, and operational excellence, earning its place as a key pillar within the Ghana Army.
Delivering remarks at the event, the Commander of the 16 Artillery Brigade, Brigadier General Selorm Kwasi Amengor, highlighted the technical and demanding nature of artillery operations. He noted that being a Gunner requires a high level of precision, expertise, teamwork, and discipline, qualities that have consistently defined the regiment’s performance.
He further commended the regiment for its contributions beyond Ghana’s borders, particularly in international peacekeeping missions in countries such as Liberia, Sierra Leone, and Lebanon. These efforts, he said, demonstrate Ghana’s commitment to global peace and security, as well as the competence of its armed forces.
The anniversary also underscored the regiment’s role in maintaining peace and stability within the Volta and Oti Regions. Communities including Nkonya, Alavanyo, and Nkwanta have benefited from the regiment’s presence, especially in managing local security concerns and supporting civil authorities.
Hon. James Gunu, in his remarks, expressed appreciation to the officers and soldiers of the regiment for their sacrifices and unwavering commitment to duty. He praised both past and present Gunners for upholding the values of the Ghana Armed Forces and contributing to national development.
He also commended the Commanding Officer, Lieutenant Colonel Jalali Din Ibrahim, for his leadership, as well as the entire regiment for their dedication and service.
The event featured ceremonial displays, military drills, and interactions between officers and guests, all aimed at showcasing the regiment’s strength and unity.
As the 66 Artillery Regiment celebrates this significant milestone, the message from the durbar was clear: its legacy of service remains strong, and its role in safeguarding peace and security continues to be as relevant as ever.
The celebration ended on a note of pride and solidarity, with the enduring motto echoing through the grounds: “Once a Gunner, Always a Gunner — Artillery, King of Battle.”
